Nau Do Gyarah, 1957 Director: Chetan Anand Producer: Dev Anand Music: S.D. Burman Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Playback: Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi Cast: Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik, Jeevan, Shashikala, Rashid Khan, Lalita Pawar, Madan Puri English translation included. During one song, at 1:40:26, the audio drops out for 15 seconds. I tried to find replacement audio, but either it's the same for other versions or they just cut out that part. I know of two sources for the film. One of them (the one I had to use because it's all I have) has horribly blown out whites. This means - among other things - that there are no shades of light grey, only blinding white. No contours to faces and no folds or wrinkles on white saris or jackets. You see this sort of thing sometimes with aged and deteriorated silent films. At one point I tinted it to help bring out the 3-dimensionality, but finally decided against it. There are still sections where the whites look very strange. The Encyclopedia Of Indian Cinema says this about Nau Do Gyarah: Raksha (Kartik) runs away from an arranged marriage to Surjit and meets Madan (Anand) on the road. Madan is on his way to collect an inheritance but he finds that his foster-aunt and cousin Kuldeep (Jeevan) have stolen it. In order to locate the original will, Madan and Raksha disguise themselves and pretend to be married. Madan is later arrested, charged with abducting Raksha but she continues the search for the will and to learn the truth about the death of Madan’s uncle. Songs included Hum hain rahi pyar ke (sung by Kishore Kumar) and Ankhon mein kya ji (sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar). Like Chori Chori (1956), this film seems to have borrowed plot elements from Capra’s It Happened One Night (1934).
