Miss Mary, 1957 Director: L.V. Prasad Music: Hemant Kumar Lyrics: Rajendra Krishan Choreographer: K.N. Dandayuthapani Playback: Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi Cast: Meena Kumari, Gemini Ganeshan, Kishore Kumar, Jamuna, Om Prakash, Achla Sachdev, Indu Shivraj, Shiva, Jagdish Sethi English subtitles included. At 27:15 Meena Kumari walks out on Gemini Ganeshan and in the next scene she's back with him on the same park bench. This version of the film is missing perhaps 25 minutes from the real length but the most obvious omission is at that headscratching place. There's 4 minutes missing that explains what happened. After she walked out she came upon the guy that had been harassing her. He harasses her some more and she tries to break free and go back to the park bench. Om Prakash intervenes and shakes the guy down for some money. Meena Kumari slowly makes her way back to the park bench but the annoying guy follows her and speaks with Gemini for a minute before disappearing at which point Meena Kumari and Gemini Ganesan begin speaking together again. The video (apart for the missing parts of the film) looks fine but the audio sounds less so. There are, from time to time, annoyiung hums. There's 3 minutes during the first dialog, after the opening credits. Three more minutes an hour or so into it, and then something like 16 minutes nearer the end of the film, and then off and on the rest of the way. It sounds worse when writing about it than it really is. Dialog can still be understood and the songs are pretty much unaffected. Unemployed Arun (Gemini Ganeshan) teams up with unemployed Miss Mary (Meena Kumari) in answering an ad wanting a married couple to teach at a school. What begins as a business arrangement soon grows into much more. In addition, the school's owners are looking for their long lost daughter Laxmi, who went missing sixteen years ago and the only thing tying her to them is a locket and an identification mark in the form of a mole on her left foot. They employ a detective Raju (Kishore Kumar) to find her. It's a charming comedy and Meena Kumari should have done more of them as she's a natural. Miss Mary is a remake of the 1955 Telegu film Missamma.
